Bradford MP David Ward has thrown his weight behind a bid for Yorkshire to host the Grand Depart of the 2016 Tour de France.
David has signed a Parliamentary Motion supporting the bid and has written to the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who are co-ordinating the bid, to give the project his backing. The bid also has the support of British cycling stars Mark Cavendish and Ben Swift and Ed Clancy.
The bid would have for the country's ever growing reputation for hosting great sporting events. In the coming five years, Britain will host athletes from across the globe for the 2012 Olympics, the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2014 Ryder Cup, the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup and the 2017 World Athletics Championships.
Commenting, David said:
"I am delighted to support the bid to host the world's greatest cycle race here in Yorkshire. We have the perfect landscape for it and I have no doubt that the county would provide a thrilling opening stage to the Tour.
"And with over 88 million spectators last year, the Tour is a fantastic opportunity to showcase what we have to offer to the world. Following on from our recent successes with the Rugby World Cup and events such as the World Corporate Games, Bramham International Horse Trials and the British Ice Figure and Dance Skating Championships, this event would really help put Yorkshire on the map as a world class sporting venue.
"I urge everyone in Bradford to get behind this campaign by signing Welcome to Yorkshire's petition to bring the Tour to Yorkshire."
