Bradford East MP David Ward this week visited a local textile firm who are helping Bradford to re-cycle unwanted clothing.
This week it has been revealed that Britons are throwing away half a million tonnes of unwanted clothing each year into land fill. This places increased pressure on the remaining land fill space in the country and also increases the amount we pay in Land fill tax. The amount of clothing ending up in land fill has increased by a third in the past few years.
David Ward MP at Randisi Textiles LTD
original set up in Italy and has been based in Bradford since 1997. Based on Mulgrave Street they sort around 100 tonnes of old clothing a week, collected from charity shops, household waste and recycling centres. Once sorted most of the clothing is sold to countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Pakistan where there is a desperate need for affordable clothing.
Company Director Joseph Randisi said:
"We take 97% of the unwanted clothing and make sure it is re-used either as clothing or shredded to become padding in mattresses. Only 3% of the clothing is sent on to land fill. We are proud to be based in Bradford doing our bit to help the environment".
David Ward MP said:
"Randisi Textiles are a great example of how the textile trade in Bradford is still alive and kicking in 2012 I was impressed with the passion and commitment they have to recycling. We often hear about how Britain is a 'throw-away society' but, businesses like this are leading the way to a greener and sustainable future".
"I would urge anyone who is clearing out their wardrobe to make sure that unwanted clothing is hand to charity shops or recycled as I found out this week there are plenty of ways clothing can be re-used".
